Audio- My system

And Here's How it All started...

I first started getting intersted in High End Audio when I spotted my first pair of speakers at a local costco. They were these big KLH 80 dollar a peice speakers I said I had to have. Once i finally earned enough money to buy them I brought them home, hooked them up to my Aiwa mini system and I was hooked. Well, my tastes in music have grown and my system has gotten a little better but I still have that same passion for HiFi. I have also gotten into Tubes after always hearing about everyone rave about their magical sound for years. Well I have to admit, they certainly add something to the sound that you might call Magical, but unlike magic, this is real.

Most Audiophiles will tell you that its all about the music, true. Its like having a sports car, high performace, high quality. but if you never take it out for a drive how do you enjoy it? Audio is the same way, HiFi isint just about the music, its about the quality of the music and the sound. If you told me that you enjoy your favorite song on a good system just as much as a clock radio id probbly say your deaf! But it is about the music, some people seem like they only care about the gear... sure the gear is cool but I like the music too!

The Cables for the Plasma are run through the wall to provide a clean installation. If I had another place to put all the compoments it would be Really Slick! I spent about two and a half hours doing wire management back there, About 400 zip ties later, and alot of imagination I think its pretty neat looking. You can only see a couple wires from the front which isint nearly as bad as the rats nest that would be back there if I didnt manage it. The TV is mounted on the wall with some lag screws that are so long that they almost go through the studs to the other side of the wall. That TV isint going anywhere! Didnt even budge with the 6.6 magnitude earthquake we just had. Nor did the speakers. Earthquake tested, And approved! Not everything in my room was so fortunate however.

The Odyssey Khartago Monoblocks, Showing What they are really made of! One of the best buys in Audio that I have come across. The custom nameplate comes standard. Also note the very clean layout and quality construction, Highly reccomend that you give Klaus Bunge, the owner of Odyssey a call for more information on his products ! This pair is upgraded from the standard mono's with 120,000uf capacitance each along with internal cable upgrade.

Odyssey Tempest Preamplifier. Went from a modded Bottlehead Foreplay (See DIY pages) to this for added convenience of the remote control as well as a more conventional looking peice. It wasnt as huge of a difference I had though it might be going from the bottlehead to the odyssey but I definetly gained more detail, quieter and more controlled sound.

Quality Contrustion at its finest. The case is so well made its actually kinda hard to get apart because the tolerances on things are so small. The knobs are machined from a solid peice of aluminum as is everything on the faceplate and the glass insert is sandblasted and has two blue LED's that shine from the side for illumination.

Inside the Tempest. Note that the ribbon cable going to the input selector switches in different than stock because I replaced the switches after I broke them by stupidly setting the preamp on its faceplate.

The remote control processor board

Sansui SR-838 Turntable, Grado Black Cartridge. I replaced the stock spring feet with some hard rubber feet because the originals were deteriorated. To keep the isolation effect the stock feet provided I built a custom air mass isolation platform much like the one underneath my cd player from african mohagany and used some red oak stain to get a darker finish that I usually go for. I have also replaced the stock rca output cable with some monster interlink 400 bulk cable and canare rca's

When I first got this table The platter speed fluctuated to the point of making records unlistenable, After dissasembling the motor and cleaning the strobe disc and strobe sensor assebly the speed is now perfectly stable.

My DIY "Audiophile" grade powerstrip. I built this so I can plug my monoblocks directly into the wall without having to use a cheap flimsy (and ugly) powerstrip. The outlet is in a metal box which i constructed an african mogogany case around and finished off with an interesting coverplate.

The Powercable is epoxied to the chassis of the outlet box itself to provide a clean looking seal and strain relief.
